Department of Education

The Department of Education at the University of Balamand prepares students to become leaders in the field of education using an interdisciplinary and transformational approach to teaching and learning. Our philosophy of education is based on progressive active learning theories and critical inquiry. Our graduates approach curricular reform based on research embedded decision-making practices. Through civic engagement and community outreach initiatives, our programs promote inclusion, social justice and empowerment in education.

Bachelor of Arts
The Bachelor of Arts prepares classroom teachers through an interdisciplinary approach that addresses the needs of all learners. Future educators will develop the knowledge about the disciplines taught in schools, the developmental characteristics and needs of learners and expertise in interactive teaching methodologies.

The Teaching Diploma enables individuals to advance their careers and become competitive in educational fields. Two types of TD are offered according to the BA or BS degree of the student:

  1. TD in Basic Education (Grade 1-6)
  2. Specialized TD (English Language, French Language, Arabic Language, Mathematics, Sciences, Economics, Arts, Computer Science, Physical Education, Business

Objectives of the BA +TD

  • - To develop in future educators an interdisciplinary approach to education anchored in sociology, psychology, the arts and didactics.

  • - To prepare future educators for all levels of education with knowledge about the disciplines to be taught in schools, and with expertise in the teaching methodologies.

  • - To foster future educators with critical thinking and problem solving skills.

  • - To motivate research-oriented and committed professionals to be life-long learners.

Program Learning Outcomes of the BA +TD

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
  • - Demonstrate essential knowledge of the learners, the disciplines, pedagogy, sociology and psychology of learning and the curriculum.

  • - Plan for and implement effective teaching and learning experiences using appropriate language, strategies, and instructional tools meeting diverse learners’ needs.

  • - Design and use assessment and evaluation methods to scaffold individual learner’s development.

  • - Establish a supportive and safe classroom environment that optimizes learners’ involvement, constructive interactions and communication.

  • - Enhance meaningful teaching and learning experiences through meaningful interdisciplinary activities and educational technologies.

  • - Foster respectful, professional, and collaborative relationships among all members of the teaching-learning community.

  • - Engage in autonomous lifelong learning through critical reflection on experiences and continuous professional learning.

Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Educational Technology
The University of Balamand’s Department of Education believes that technology has had an enormous impact on the field of education both in theory and in practice. Through the use of educational technology, we prepare our future educators and instructional designers to create educational products with an aesthetic and a theoretical grounding. Besides preparing useful, up-to-date and user-friendly products to be used in the classroom and outside, our future educators have a vision of delivering educational products that can be accessible to all learners, at all levels, of all needs and socio-economic backgrounds. Our vision is based on a grounding of current educational theories balanced with the continuous changes in technological advancement.

Program Objectives

The program aims at preparing future educational professionals:
  • - To use information and communication technologies to support teaching and learning in K-16 and adult learning environments.

  • - To function through the use of technology on the administrative, private and classroom level.

  • - To apply theories, methodologies, and emerging technologies to design and develop multimedia instructional products.

  • - To develop an awareness of the instructional design process to develop technology-enhanced learning environments.

  • - To adapt their technology skills across disciplines and skills.

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
  • - Identify and analyze a variety of instructional design models.

  • - Use authoring tools to create effective hypermedia/multimedia instructional materials.

  • - Develop instructional materials and products for various distance educational delivery methods.

  • - Conduct basic and applied research related to technology integration and implementation.

  • - Use learning technologies to create an educational product and technology-enhanced learning environments

  • - Apply educational theories and pedagogical models in the development of a technology-enhanced learning environment.

  • - Implement and evaluate technology-supported learning environments.

Master of Arts in Curriculum and Educational Management
The MA in Curriculum and Educational Management is committed to preparing educational leaders ready to direct progressive changes in schools, educational institutions, as well as in the public and private sectors domains. Our program promotes critical analysis of curricular theory on both a national and an international level. The study of curriculum theory is approached from diverse theoretical perspectives that in turn impact curriculum practices. The program produces educational leaders who can approach curriculum practice to seek change through professional development, action research, reflective teaching methodology, critical resource analysis and varied evaluation and assessment standards.

The program aims at preparing future educational professionals:
  • - Develop future curriculum and instructional leaders for schools.

  • - Allow present educators to expand their career by moving from teaching to the larger and broader skills of curriculum enhancement, development, supervision and evaluation.

  • - Prepare educational leaders to apply innovative educational processes within the larger domains of educational cycles or discipline units.

  • - Develop curriculum consultants to tackle innovations in policy and educational development in the governmental and non-governmental domains.

  • - Prepare graduate students as educational researchers.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, students will be able to:
  • - Apply and expand on teaching experience to analyze and assess curriculum theory as well as curriculum operations.

  • - Analyze the Lebanese national curriculum and curricula used in Lebanese schools based on current research.

  • - Develop and design implementation of active learning and innovative projects for specific subjects or school wide projects.

  • - Construct and evaluate different curricular models based on national and international curriculum theory and principles.

  • - Apply progressive instructional strategies based on learning theories, including expanding role of educational technology in the various fields of study.

  • - Develop advanced methodological and evaluative models according to varied curriculum approaches by analyzing resources to align with evidence based advances in education.

  • - Construct and elaborate on pertinent and complex evaluation/assessment strategies to gauge student learning, as well as curriculum effectiveness.

  • - Design and conduct mixed, quantitative and qualitative research.

After Graduation
Students who graduate with a BA from the Department of Education are eligible to become primary school teachers and resource developers. Those who complete the Teaching Diploma are eligible to become teachers in Primary, Middle, or Secondary School depending on their specialisation such as Math, Science Economics Computer Science Arabic Language French Language and English Language and Literature. The MA in Curriculum and Education Management and the MA in Educational Technology prepares graduates to expand their career forward the practice of curriculum coordination or technology integration in all fields of education.
